Having a baby: Giving birth

Sometimes the stork goes on vacation and you need to get the baby here yourself. Here's what goes on during the birthing process. Don't worry if your husband doesn't read this, he probably be watching playing with the birthing room TV remote looking for a basketball or football game. It's up to you.

According to The March of Dimes:

What you need to know:

The beginning of labor feels different for every woman. You’ll know you’re in labor when you feel frequent and regular contractions, the only true sign that labor has begun. The length of labor varies for all women. The average labor lasts 12-14 hours for a first baby. Labor is often faster for second and later children.

What you can do:
Take a childbirth education class. These classes help prepare you for labor and delivery.

Call your health care provider when:

Your contractions are between 5 and 10 minutes apart.
Your water breaks, especially if the fluid is stained dark, greenish brown.
You experience vaginal bleeding.
You can no longer walk or talk during contractions.
You are concerned about your health or the health and well-being of the baby.
If you think you may be going into labor, don’t hesitate to call your health care provider, no matter what time of day or night.

Labor and Delivery: What to Expect

You'll know you're in labor when you feel frequent and regular contractions—the only true sign that labor has begun. These contractions cause the cervix to shorten and open (dilate) in preparation for delivery.

When Should You Call Your Health Care Provider?

Call when:
Your contractions are between 5 and 10 minutes apart.
Your water breaks, especially if the fluid is stained dark, greenish brown.
You experience vaginal bleeding.
You can no longer walk or talk during contractions.
You have concerns about your health or the health and well-being of the baby.
If you think you may be going into labor, don't hesitate to call your health care provider, no matter what time of day or night.

What Happens When You Arrive at the Hospital?
Although every hospital is different, when you arrive to have your baby, you will probably:

Fill out hospital admission paperwork, including insurance information (it's common for this to be done in advance through the health care provider)
Go to the labor and delivery unit
Change into a hospital gown, or your own nightgown or big shirt
Be examined to see how dilated your cervix is
Be connected to a fetal monitor to time the contractions and check the baby's heartbeat

What Are the Three Stages of Childbirth?

Stage 1
Labor. This stage begins when the pregnant woman has regular contractions that open (dilate) her cervix. This stage lasts until the cervix is fully opened to 10 centimeters (about 4 inches). This stage can occur gradually with no noticeable contractions over a period of days, but it can also happen in just a few hours with very clear contractions. Every labor is different.

Stage 2
Pushing and Delivery. This stage begins when the cervix is fully open and ends with the birth of the baby. The average length for this stage is one to two hours, but many women have shorter or longer experiences.

Stage 3
Delivery of the Placenta. This stage begins immediately after the birth of the baby and ends with the delivery of the placenta. This stage usually lasts between 10 minutes and one hour.
What Is Labor Pain Like?
Different women respond to the pain of labor and delivery in different ways. For some, contractions may seem like strong menstrual cramps. For others, the pain may be stronger and difficult to bear. For more information, go to Coping with Labor Pain.

What Can a Woman in Labor Do About the Pain?
Some women prefer to deal with the pain of childbirth naturally, using breathing and relaxation techniques. Childbirth education classes can help you learn these techniques. Most women, however, do get some form of pain relief through medication.

Having a baby: Yes, it does hurt a bit

OK, we know how baby's get here, but there is a little bit of discomfort involved in the landing (did we say discomfort?) Here are a few tips from the March of Dimes on how to deal with the pain of delivery:

Coping with Labor Pain

There are many ways to make labor and delivery more comfortable, including:

Relaxation techniques

Breathing exercises

Pain-relieving drugs

Learn as much as you can about your options. Find out which pain-relief choices are available at your hospital or birthing center. Discuss your preferences with your health care provider ahead of time.

It's best to remain flexible and see how your labor goes. If your labor takes an unexpected turn, you may need to change your plans. Here are some of the common approaches to pain relief during labor and delivery.

Pain-Relieving Drugs
A number of drugs are commonly used to help ease the discomforts of labor and delivery. They are generally safe for mother and baby. But drugs differ in how helpful they are. All pose some risks for both mother and baby, although most are not serious.

Pain-relieving drugs fall into two categories: analgesics and anesthetics.

About Analgesics

Analgesics relieve pain without the total loss of feeling or muscle movement.
Analgesics reduce pain, but do not always stop it completely.
Systemic analgesics are often given as injections into the muscle or vein. They are called “systemic” because they affect the whole nervous system. Systemic analgesics reduce pain, but do not cause loss of consciousness.
Regional analgesia tends to be the most effective form of pain relief during labor. It causes few side effects. Examples are epidural blocks, spinal blocks, and combined spinal-epidural blocks. With these pain-management methods, the woman gets an injection in the lower back to numb the lower body.
Narcotics are a type of analgesic. These powerful drugs decrease the way a person perceives pain. They make it easier for women in labor to rest.
About Anesthetics

Anesthetics block all feeling, including pain.
Anesthetics also block muscle movement.
Local anesthesia creates numbness or loss of feeling in a small area. It does not reduce the pain of contractions.
General anesthetics cause you to lose consciousness. If you are given general anesthesia, you will fall asleep and feel no pain. This option is used when other choices aren't possible or aren't the best choice for medical reasons.
If you have a cesarean delivery, you may be given general, spinal or epidural anesthesia. The choice will depend on your health, the health of your baby, and the medical conditions surrounding your delivery.

Non-Drug Options
You can help make your labor more comfortable by learning all you can about drug-free methods for pain relief. Examples include acupuncture, hypnosis, relaxation techniques, and changing position frequently during labor. Some of these methods can ease discomfort early in labor. They can then be followed by pain-relieving drugs, if you need them.

Taking a childbirth education class is a good way to find out about your labor and delivery options. Many cover a range of pain-management options. Most teach breathing and relaxation techniques that can help you control pain during contractions.

Deciding What's Right for You
Here are some questions to ask as you explore pain-relief methods:

How does the method work?
How will it affect me and my baby?
How quickly will it work?
How long will the pain relief last?
Can I combine the method with other types of pain relief?
When during labor is the method available?
Is the method available at my hospital or birthing center?

You can ask for pain relief at any point during labor and delivery. The more you know about your options, the better able you'll be to make decisions that result in a more comfortable and satisfying delivery.

Having A Baby: How Will You Know You Are Pregnant?

Since we sell so many new baby gifts, we thought it would be a good idea to pass along some information to you from different pregancy experts in the field. Following is a list of how to know you are pregnant, from the March of Dimes.

How Will You Know When You’re Pregnant?

Here are some signs that you might be pregnant:

1. You miss your period.
2. You feel sick to your stomach or throw up.
3. Your breasts are big and sore. The area around your nipples gets darker.
4. You crave certain foods. Or you really dislike certain foods.
5. You feel tired all the time.
6. A home pregnancy test shows you're pregnant.

If you think you might be pregnant, go to your health care provider. The sooner you know you're pregnant, the sooner you can begin prenatal care so that you can start taking good care of yourself and your growing baby.

It's Hard Saying Goodbye to the Summer Interns

Whether it was picking, packing, shipping, answering phones, setting up databases, or entering orders, we were delighted to have two of the nicest college students working for us this past summer.

In another week or so they will be back to school. They brightened the day, and were a tremendous help. We look forward to them coming back during their short Christmas break to help out with the last minute holiday rush.

You can bet that these two interns will be delighted when we send them some of our very special College Care Packages. One will be living in an apartment with other students, the other a dorm for the very first time. We know that our first year college student will have alot of fun settling into her new surroundings...and sharing a college care package with other dorm students will help in making new friends.

We wish both of them the very best of luck in the upcoming semester, and we thank them for all of their wonderful help this past summer.

Best Wishes to All College Students. And our very best wishes to all moms and dads who are sending their first kid off to college for the very first time!

D'Jais, Belmar New Jersey Thirty Years later

A Dance Down Memory Lane:

During the summers of 1974, 1975,1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979 (not quite sure when it ended...I think 1979 perhaps was the last summer) I split my summers between Belmar and Seaside Heights. It all depended on the mood and majority rule. But anyway, the times at Belmar always meant D'Jais on Friday and Saturday night (unless we were at Mary Husband's Pub, the Royal Manor, the Osprey in Manasquan, or The Chatterbox in Seaside Heights)

But D'jais was always my favorite. For those that have never been there it is a HUGE bar (ok, there are maybe 4 bar stations inside, and dining tables in a separate room, and then tables on the front porch)....and then a huge stage. Back in those days, the house band was named "Holme" and they more or less covered songs of other bands.....most notable, "Rosalita" by, yes, you guess it, my man Bruce Springsteen. They also had their own original song "Garden Start Parkway Boogie". Anyway, I was young, tan, FLAT TUMMY, and yes, I ACTUALLY WORE HIGH HEELS!!!!

Holme appears every Monday night now during the summers at D'Jais. My sisters thought it would be fun to go. They've been going once a year for the past few years, and I never had the desire to go. Something drew me there last night...so there I was driving (alone) down Route 18, and got there about an hour and a half before my sisters arrived I walked in alone....walked right past the bouncers. OK, do you really think the bouncers were going to proof me?

Well, I get in there, and although it is dark, there are hundreds of people milling about. I almost felt like I was 17 or 18 again, the same bars, the same floors, the same sounds, the same smells, the same EVERYTHING.....even the same people. Yes, the same people.

The people there last night were the same people I partied with 30 some years ago. Except, something was different. They were old. They looked old...it was almost like a movie. All these people were hanging around singing and laughing and drinking and having a good time. But the main had gained a few pounds and the women a few wrinkles. They didn't look like the hot young bodies that used to dance the night away back in the late 1970s. It was a very strange feeling.

What was it with these people? If I ran into them individually say in Shop Rite or Home Depot, would they still look old? Or was it because they were in a place of my youth, a place so firmly etched in my memory that they looked so out of place. Would it have been different if I walked into the same bar, but the crowd was in their early 20's? It probably would have looked natural had that been the case.

But these people didn't belong here. It was almost as if they were violating my memories of long ago. And for those of you who attend Bruce Springsteen concerts, or whatever....it is NOT the same. You see with Bruce, we all have been going to see him over the years......maybe there are two or five years between concerts, but it has been consistent, non-the-less. That's why this was different. There was no line of connection over the 30 years. It was there 30 years ago, then gone, and then POOF.....all of a sudden it was all front and center to me in an instant.

Anyway, I had a drink or two, and after awhile, my sisters arrived. I turned to the only "young" person in the establishment and said, "This is what will happen to you 30 years from now. You and all of your friends will be dancing to the music that you dance to now." He just laughed. I guess it is hard to imagine what life will be like at 51 years old when you finally just celebrated your 21st birthday.

Oh well. I had fun, I had a good time, but, it was very weird. Very hard to explain.

The Great Depression

What if President Bush wasn't really that "dumb". What if everything he has done was a because of his power to get more money for oil? Think about it. We are headed for a depression because the government keeps printing out paper money to pay for the war in Iraq. We will eventually have to pay that back through higher taxes, higher prices on goods, etc. and for what? So we can fund a war in Iraq that profits the Bush family. It also profits the Cheney family with all of the Haliburton contracts. What have we become? Have we truly sold ourselves out to two powerful families?

David Cook: American Idol "Going to Disney World"

Our office went to see the American Idol The Tour the other night. First half was on the boring side, but the Davids were wonderful. It made me remember to post David Cooks "Going to Disney World". Here's a press release from the folks at Disney:

LOS ANGELES -- To celebrate "The American Idol Experience" attraction coming to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, David Cook shouted the famous words "I'm Going to Disney World!" Wednesday night, May 21, after being crowned the newest "American Idol" in the popular show's star-studded season finale in Los Angeles. Camera crews captured Cook's pronouncement on the Nokia Theatre stage just moments after "American Idol" host Ryan Seacrest announced his name to millions of viewers watching worldwide.

Later that night, Cook was featured in the newest "I'm Going to Disney World!" commercial that aired only hours after the finale. Starring in a role usually occupied by sports stars -- such as Super Bowl or World Series champs -- Cook is the first singer to ever star in the Disney commercial.

Cook's role in the "I'm Going to Disney World" ad is all in celebration of the new "American Idol" attraction that will open at Walt Disney World in Florida in January 2009.

Currently under construction at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park, it's the first attraction anywhere in the world based on the popular television series, through an agreement with FremantleMedia Enterprises and 19 Entertainment.

When complete, Disney guests will be able to experience the thrill of an interactive attraction amidst all the glitz and glamour of the "American Idol" television show.

By starring in the commercial, Cook joins a line up of superstar professional athletes from the fields of football, basketball, and baseball, who have shouted the famous line during the past 20+ years, "I'm Going to Disney World!"
