What Is A Wedding Favor And Its History?
By Jesse Miller

A wedding favor is a small token given by the newly weds to their guests in their wedding ceremony or reception. These are given as gifts of appreciation for sharing the special day with the couple. To recipients, these keepsakes are souvenirs. In the ancient world, these keepsakes were seen as sharing of luck from the newly married couple to their guests. Keepsakes come in many forms, shapes and sizes. Some give away figurines, magnets, bottle openers etc. Depending on the married couple, they can give away simple gifts such as a candle or elaborate ones like a small gold box.

This practice is believed to have started in the ancient world. The couple gave away biscuits, fruits and nuts. Before the wedding ceremony began, the guests were given these gifts so that they could eat them while the ceremony was ongoing. This tradition was practiced by wealthy families and in Italy; the couple gave their guests silks scarves and incense. Italians called it a bomboniere while the French called it bonbonniere. European aristocrats gave their guests a small box, which contains sugar cubes.

These boxes were not ordinary boxes; these were made from porcelain, crystal or were covered with precious stones. Sugar cubes were expensive at during that time, hence, it symbolized wealth and royalty. Weddings were regarded as lucky occasions. When couples give out gifts, it is believed that luck is also given to their guests. Giving of these was not strictly reserved for weddings only. These tokens were also given during birthdays, baptism and other special occasions. Once the prices of sugar cubes dropped, these objects were substituted with almonds. Later on, these almonds were coated with sugar. This symbolizes the bittersweet marriage. Guests were usually given five pieces of almonds. Each of these represented fertility, wealth, health, happiness and longevity. Today, these almonds are called Jordan Almonds.

These days, these gifts are given as a sign of gratitude. These gifts are now an integral part of the wedding. There isn't a couple that wont give something away to their guests during their wedding day. Some couples still adhere to tradition. In Italy, couples give chocolate covered almonds while in Spain, guests are given a vase that contains orange blossoms. The Dutch give candies to their guests. Couples today don't just give away sugarcoated almonds. Some give more personalized tokens that show the couple's personality, bears their names, and their date of marriage. Or these gifts can go by the theme of the wedding like fairy tale wedding or Asian theme. These gifts compliment and complete the wedding's theme. There are many companies today that specialize in these keepsakes.

Father's Day Speeches

With both Father's Day and June Weddings upon us.....

Tips For A Memorable Father of the Bride Speech
By M. Bruno

The father of the bride is one of the most important people at a wedding. His role according to protocol involves critical duties such as making sure that his daughter arrives at the place of the wedding ceremony on time, walking her down the aisle, giving his daughter away to the groom and the all important father of the bride speech at the reception afterward.

If you are the father of the bride, your mind will be swimming with emotions about the giant step that your daughter is about to take, how your family will change, your new son-in-law, the reception, paying for the reception, and the speech…my gosh, you have to make a speech in just a few hours !

Many dads react with head scratching bewilderment when the topic of speech making on such an important day comes up. Even fathers who have experience making speeches may wonder just what they are supposed to say.

The first thing to keep in mind is that the father of the bride speech should include a toast to the bride and groom. The father of the bride speech is traditionally the first speech that is given at the wedding reception.

What Makes a Good Father of the Bride Speech?

• First, dad will want to acknowledge his daughter. Mention a few things about her childhood, how she fell off a bike and laughed, the first time she helped mom make a cake, her best day at school, her contribution to the family.

• Say a few lines about the groom, what a fine man he is even if he can’t fix a car, spell, or cook. Tell the guests and his family how proud you are to have him as a son in law.

• Give a toast to both the bride and the groom, wishing them a life of love, health and happiness..

• A bit of sentiment and humor will provide just the right mood for the celebrants who will long remember your words.

• Brevity is King… Most dad’s are happy to hear that short is sweet when it comes to the father of the bride speech. After all, this is a party, not a work seminar…so brief, poignant comments sprinkled with humor and sentiment will add just the right touch to your daughter’s wedding day !.

Imagine erasing wedding speech jitters by having a professionally written and inspirational father of the bride speech that will guarantee the wedding day is full of joy, love and laughter. You can by visiting: http://www.weddingspeeches.all-weddingplanning.com

MILLION DOLLAR LUXURY AT SANDALS RESORTS

Press Release.........

MILLION DOLLAR LUXURY AT SANDALS RESORTS
~New Million Dollar Villas debuting July 1st at Sandals Regency La Toc Enhance the Luxury Included Vacation Experience at Sandals Resorts~

CASTRIES, St. Lucia (March 14, 2008) – Sandals Regency La Toc Golf Resort & Spa in St. Lucia will debut four lavish Sunset Bluff Million Dollar Luxury Villas with Private Pool & Whirlpool on July 1, 2008. According to Sandals Resorts CEO, Adam Stewart, the new villas, which will combine 800 square feet of living space and 400 square feet of outdoor space to make one dramatic and very indulgent private villa, are the epitome of the new Luxury Included Vacation Sandals Resorts introduced late last year.

“We are committed to capturing the imagination of guests with suites that provide not only the best elements of comfort, privacy, service and opulence, but that offer settings that are truly awe-inspiring,” said Stewart.

The new Sunset Bluff Million Dollar Luxury Villas with Private Pool & Whirlpool are cantilevered above the resort’s highest point, ensuring an unhindered, full 180-degree view of the Caribbean Sea and lush surrounding island of St. Lucia. A thre-level outdoor sundeck, that is accessible by either the living room or bedroom, captures sea breezes and features a glass waterfall that spills into a zero-entry plunge pool and private whirlpool. The setting is among the most dramatic in Sandals’ collection of luxury suites that are also located in Jamaica, Antigua and Nassau in The Bahamas. The four Sunset Bluff Million Dollar Luxury Villas will be accessible by foot or golf cart, and all are butler category suites to ensure the highest, most personalized level of service.

Million Dollar Design
Known for introducing as standard, four-poster mahogany beds, the new Million Dollar Villas are a design departure for Sandals Resorts. According to the design team for Sandals Resorts, the traditional use of a four-poster bed presented a design challenge. “We didn’t want anything to distract from the view,” says Stewart.

Instead, the villa includes a more contemporary, clean-lined scheme of neutrals for the soft goods including an oversized sectional in the living room and French-polished, handmade mahogany furniture including freestanding nightstands in the bedroom. The sleigh bed features a leather upholstered headboard and footboard and is covered in a custom-embroidered duvet and Egyptian cotton sheets. Turkish saturnia tile serves as the flooring, and not one, but two, 40” plasma televisions are located in the villa, in both the living area and bedroom. Novel lighting techniques highlight windows that are draped in patent leather over linen and continue to draw the eye to the view. In the bath, a freestanding tub is set against a wall of white onyx pebbles and directly under a skylight. A custom vanity topped with thick marble and electric backlit mirrors that eliminate glare for better shaving and make-up application plus separate water closet with bidet complete the setting. The result is soothing and inviting.

MILLION DOLLAR SUNSET BLUFF VILLAS – 2

“We are proud to introduce the new Sunset Bluff Million Dollar Luxury Villas at Sandals Regency La Toc,” said Stewart. “These suites are one of a kind. They take even further the new luxury experience we launched last year and best illustrate our commitment to unprecedented levels of service and amenities. We are a resort company dedicated to choice, style, and uncompromising standards. Our Million Dollar Villas are the crowning glory of a collection of spectacular suites that include enhanced food & beverage, lavish spas, luxury amenities, and exclusive partnerships. Sandals is the Luxury Included Vacation.”

Kentucky Derby - The passing of Eight Belles

The Kentucky Derby is always exciting. From the silly Princess Di hats to the Old Kentucky Home anthem, it's always fun and refreshing to watch every year...and something to look forward to. This year, Big Brown just completely amazed everyone from starting in the 20th post position to out running just about every horse.....except Eight Belles.

If you follow the overview of the race, yes Big Brown was amazing but so was Eight Belles. She was far and away the leader of the group (if you take Big Brown out of the equation). She was incredible.

And then, sadness. With both of her front ankles blown to bits, the decision was made to euthanize her. I'm sure most of the crowd at Churchill Downs had no idea what was going on at the time, but those of us viewing from our stores or homes witnessed one of the most heartbreaking finishes of all times.

Life is fleeting. You never know. Rest in peace beautiful Eight Belles.

Over one million people sailed from New York's three ports (Manhattan, Brooklyn and Cape Liberty, Bayonne, NJ) in 2007, according to the New York City Economic Development Corporation, and that number is expected to increase in 2008.
Since 9/11 the number of ships and passengers increased to the point that additional berthing facilities were opened in Red Hook, Brooklyn and Cape Liberty (Bayonne), New Jersey. Today every major cruise line has several ships that home port in New York for extended seasons of voyages ranging from a one-day party cruise to a 100+-day circumnavigation of the globe.

Four cruise lines (Cunard Line, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line) have year-round service from New York. Itineraries range from one-day party cruises to a 99-day full circumnavigation of the globe.
