Reasons Why You Should Respect Your Mother - Part II - Vacations

Now that you're getting a little bit older and planning your own vactions whether as a single adult or a family person, you can't help but feel a little bit of nostalgia thinking about your vacations as a child. It wasn't just about driving down to the Jersey shore and staying at your weird Uncle's house in Lavallete. No, it was more about the special vacations that your mother managed to weazle your father into. All that change she would save, coupons that she would clip, and home cooked meals instead of restaurants to save up money for your yearly flings. For that, and an incredible amount of other stuff, you should "respect your Mother".

  • She always told your father about the planned vacations to Disney World AFTER she booked non-refundable airline tickets.

  • During the lean years, she always found ways to get either discounted tickets or discounted meals for the Parks, and she hunted down the best rates for on-site Disney hotels. And she always managed to squeeze five people and luggage into a compact car.

  • Did you ever stop to realize why Mickey Mouse always made it over to your table at Chef Mickey’s….and lingered for a long time? Your mother could charm the buttons off a mouse when she had to.

  • Her overt flirting with the front desk staff may have been embarrassing, but you must have noticed that you always got a water view room while traveling on a budget.

  • She embarrassed you no end at the Grand Canyon screaming “Watch out before you fall!” But now that you’re an adult, you realize that she saved your life.

  • Remember how she guided you through airports so that you would know what to do once you started flying on your own? You couldn’t understand why she kept telling you to pay attention, but remember your first solo flight when you missed your plane? Don’t you wish you had listened to her back then?

  • She was the one who introduced you to all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean, where you learned just how precious a band of plastic around your wrist could be. Remember how you flipped the band over from purple to white and the bartenders thought you were a newlywed and not a 16 year old kid?

  • Even though she spent half of the vacation sick in the bathroom, she was the one who planned the trip to Cancun so that you kids would know your way around in case you came back a few years later while in college.

  • Remember how embarrassed she made you when she was the only person on the catamaran in Antigua who donned a life jacket when the boat turned from the Caribbean into the Atlantic waters and the waves were 10 feet higher than the boat?

  • She embarrassed the heck out of you when she argued with your father against buying a horseback riding package from a “local vendor” on the beach in Antigua. But, when you all had to hitch a ride back to the resort on the back of a truck carrying slaughtered cow parts, well, she actually had a point.

  • After spending Spring Break with a bunch of college buddies in a sleazy motel room, you finally realized that not all hotel rooms had mini-bars and turndown service. Now you understand why your mother fought your dad tooth and nail to stay in 4 or 5 star hotels all those years.

  • Finally, while driving home penniless from your Florida spring break, just who went online and booked a Holiday Inn Express with free breakfast for you and your friends? Yep, that’s right. It was your mom.

What Is The Salary for "A Mom"?

What is a mother's work really worth?
Dory Devlin, Shine staff, on Tue May 5, 2009 2:32pm PDT

    Salary.com

One of my favorite quotes in Laurie PK's Mother's Day post comes from the eminently quotable Anne Morrow Lindbergh: “By and large, mothers and housewives are the only workers who do not have regular time off. They are the great vacationless class.”

Add to that the fact that mothering work is unpaid, and it's a double whammy. True words like Lindbergh's are why it's both illuminating and depressing to put a dollar figure to the work mothers do at home. Just in time for Mother's Day, Salary.com has done that in its 9th annual mom salary survey. This year, a stay-at-home mom performing the 10 most popular "mom-job functions" does the work equivalent of a $122,732 salary, up 5 percent over last year's calculations. A mom who works outside the home 40 hours a week does work that equates to an annual cash compensation of $76,184, an 11 percent increase. A lucrative second job--if that second shift were actually a paid gig.

How do the folks at Salary.com arrive at such hefty numbers? First, they take 10 jobs that closely match the multiple jobs moms do at home. Think laundry machine operator, janitor, van driver, housekeeper, computer operator, cook, daycare center teacher, facilities manager, psychologist, and chief executive officer. Then they surveyed 12,150 moms to quantify their hours worked in each role for a typical week. Salary.com's compensation professionals weighted the different responsibilities of the job to determine the average mom's overall total compensation.

The (fake) salaries for mothers increased during a year salary increases are rare because Salary.com's researchers found that moms--stay-at-home and work-outside-the-home--are outsourcing less of the around-the-house jobs and, as a result, are putting in lots of "overtime." According to the survey, the working mom had 17 hours of overtime in addition to her full-time hours both at work and as a mom, and the stay-at-home mom worked 56 hours of overtime, bringing her work week to 96 hours. That's a lot of unpaid work.

So, what's the value in calculating the value of a mother's work if there is no way she'll ever get paid for it? Well, in a culture that assigns value in dollars, it's important to see in black and white the many jobs moms do and how those jobs are valued in the job market. It's also a way for Salary.com to highlight how its tools shed light on how employers set salaries for jobs.

"This is our ninth year looking at the value of mom's work. It has become a popular annual event because it not only recognizes the critical value of what moms do, but educates the public on the key factors that determine what employers are willing to pay for a given job," said Meredith Hanrahan, senior vice president at Salary.com, Inc. "We value the job of mom based on her job description and calculate what an employer would have to pay in cash if they were to hire someone to do all that a mom does."

Want to know what you or a mom in your life should get paid? You can use the Mom Salary Wizard, then create a fake mom paycheck and pay stub to be sent on Mother's Day. But here's the dilemma: Knowing how much a mom should get paid can be a good thing if those around her are recognizing the value of all she does. Or, it could just make her very sad that she can't cash that check for real.

What do you think? Is there value in assigning a dollar value to all moms do?

Respecting your Jersey Mom - Part One

Reasons you should respect your Jersey mother. Part One

No matter what day of the year, whether it is a holiday, a birthday or just a day where you wake up and can actually remember what you did the night before and recognize where you are, you should always honor and respect your mother, especially if she is a Jersey Girl.

  • It would appear to the untrained eye that she may have just been gossiping with other women while she sat freezing on the bleachers during your (softball, baseball, pop Warner football, soccer, basketball…you weren’t an only child you know…) playing years. In actuality, she was on a fact finding mission to help reposition your social standing in the 5th grade.

  • No matter how old you were, she always made sure there was a brand new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle underneath the Christmas tree. It took a long while for you to figure out that some of the never opened collectibles had repeat performances during some out of stock years.

  • And who was that crazy lady that always climbed up the shelves at Toys R Us to grab the Millennium Barbie Dolls? Oh yea, it was her.

  • Remember how embarrassed she made you while she muttered out loud about how much she hated the Limited Too while trapped for 45 minutes trying to check out with Limited Too Bucks during their special sales while Britney Spears was blasted all around her. Oops she did it again!

  • She stopped two steps shy of prostitution to solicit silent auction items so that your lacrosse team could raise funds for new uniforms

  • She requested not one but two meetings with the high school principal and athletic director to complain about the way your lacrosse coach treated you. Nothing was done but years later she got the last laugh when she heard that said coach was arrested for spousal abuse.

  • She watched with her heart in her mouth as you ran up and down the lacrosse playing field with no protection save for an eye guard while lacrosse sticks were flailing all around your face.

  • Playing with sticks as a child was nothing compared to her watching in horror as you and your saber opponent went after each other with real weapons.

  • Even though she harped on you for weeks to get your research paper done and you blew her off, she was the one driving out to Wal-Mart at 9:00pm the night before the paper was due to buy ink for the printer.

  • During those lean years of middle school and early high school, whose Mom always had her mini van full of kids driving to and from the mall or movies every weekend, no matter how cold and freezing it was. Remember how she muttered about “Just what do those other women do on Friday and Saturday nights?

  • Speaking of mini vans, did you ever hear her complain (well, actually, she always did) about how she longed for a sleek golden Lexus SUV, but was stuck with her Chrysler so that they could save for your college education.

  • Who else was going to sit in the front passenger seat when you had your learners permit at age 16? Remember how angry you became with her because she was NOT a silent co-pilot.

Sending a gift or gift basket to your mom, no matter what the occasion, is a simple way that you can tell her you love and respect her, and that you are thankful for everything she did for you. Shopthegiftbasketstore.com carries a large selection of gifts and gift baskets that are just right for her.
